History of the company

The company (prior to merger) was incorporated in 1987 as a joint venture between Henkel AG & Co. KGaA, Germany (Henkel) and Tamilnadu Petroproducts Ltd.,(TPL) to manufacture eco-friendly zeolite based phosphate free detergents under the name SPIC Fine Chemicals Ltd. It was rechristened as ‘Henkel Spic India Limited’ (HSIL) during 1996.

The State of the Art plant at Karaikal commenced the commercial production of detergent Bar, Powder and Zeolite during March 1993. It is the first detergent plant in India to receive ISO 14000 certification. The plant has a capacity of 30,000 MT of detergents and 10,000 MT of Zeolite. The production facility at Karaikal is a world class plant and was the first in the country to obtain ISO 14001 certification. In consonance with the Henkel way of doing things, the other production facilities are also modernized and upgraded from time to time. Subsequently during August 05, HSIL was merged with Henkel India Ltd (formerly known as The Calcutta Chemicals Company Ltd.)

HSIL accessed capital market during the years 1992, 1994 and 1999, the shares being listed with Mumbai, Kolkatta and Chennai stock exchanges. The share capital market capitalization values around Rs.350 Crs. HSIL along with its subsidiaries manufacture and market a range of world class Detergents, Cleansers, Cosmetics & Hair Care products.
